Dalai Lama Calls for Tibet Probe
BEIJING (AP) - The Dalai Lama called Sunday for an international investigation into China's crackdown against protesters in Tibet, which he said is facing a "cultural genocide" and where his exiled government said 80 people were killed in the violence. The demonstrations were the fiercest challenge to Beijing's rule in the region in nearly two decades, leading to sympathy protests elsewhere and embarrassing China ahead of the Olympic Games.
Treasury Chief Defends Fed Intervention
WASHINGTON (AP) - Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is defending the Federal Reserve's decision to help rescue Bear Stearns Co., the teetering Wall Street investment firm. He says the Fed acted properly in "working with market participants to minimize the disruptions." The central bank on Friday stepped in to keep Bear afloat and prevent more damage to the nation's financial system if Bear's problems caused other financial firms to fall.
McCain Makes Unannounced Trip to Iraq
BAGHDAD (AP) - Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president who has linked his political future to U.S. success in Iraq, was in Baghdad on Sunday for meetings with Iraqi and U.S. diplomatic and military officials, a U.S. government official said. Details of McCain's visit were not being released for security reasons, the U.S. Embassy said.
